The Big Buddha

Yesterday we went to see the Big Buddha on the hills above Phuket. We went with a Pakistan-American family that is staying at our hotel, and all of us crowded into their rented car (with no air-conditioning). It was a hot and bumpy ride up the hill on poorly paved roads, but the view from the top, when we got there, was beautiful. The Big Buddha is, indeed, BIG, but it is under renovation and so was covered with scaffolding and not much to look at. When it is finished it will be covered in marble, apparently. Alden thought we were there to see elephants and was not terribly impressed with the Buddha, but he did have fun looking for new rocks.

It's still being built. We go up there a few times a year for the views and fresh air. There's a little restaurant about 3/4 of the way up with views over Karon. Quite when it will be all finished is anyones guess!
